How to Take Care of Eyes for Computer Users

Eyes are the window to your soul. They are also the most delicate organs in our body and they require special care and protection. While working on a computer is a normal routine for most people, it can have its negative effects on your vision. It is important to take care of your eyes while working on the computer so that you don't develop any eye problems.

Here are some tips to take care of eyes while working on the computer:

Make sure you get proper rest. Working on a computer for long hours can strain your eyes and cause fatigue, which in turn will affect your vision. To avoid this, take breaks regularly and blink often. Keep water bottle handy for refreshing yourself.

Adjust brightness level according to the room lighting. If you work at night, use dimmer lights and if you work during day time adjust brightness level accordingly. Bright light strains your eyes easily so always make sure that there is enough lighting in room where you are working on computer. Make sure that there is no glare from windows or other sources of bright light when working at night time as this will also strain your eyes causing headache or eye pain after long hours of work on computer screen.

Get an eye exam every year or two years as recommended by ophthalmologist or optometrist so that any damage caused due to prolonged usage of computer can be detected early enough before it becomes severe and irreversible damage occurs to your eyesight.

Make sure your eyes are free from dust and dirt by cleaning them with a clean cloth or tissue paper. You can also use special solutions that are available at drug stores.

Try not to look at the monitor screen directly with your bare eyes as it can cause irritation and dryness in them. If you feel like looking at the screen directly, then you should use glasses or contact lenses that suit your vision needs perfectly.

Sit with good posture and keep your head straight when using the computer. Don't tilt your head up or down while looking at the screen because that can cause neck strain and eye strain as well.

Try to go for walks during lunch time as it allows you to relax your eyes, mind and body in general as well. This also helps improve blood circulation in the body which is good for overall health too!

When to visit an Optometrist

If you notice any symptoms of dryness or redness in your eyes, consult an optometrist immediately!

Many people think that the only time you need to see an optometrist is when you are getting your eyes tested for new glasses or contact lenses. However, there are many other reasons why it is important to visit your eye doctor on a regular basis.

You have trouble seeing clearly during the day. If you find yourself having difficulty reading large print, seeing street signs and facial expressions, then this could be a sign of myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). It may also be a symptom of presbyopia, which is normal age-related loss of ability to focus on close objects. It can be treated by wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Your vision changes over time. As we age, our eyes tend to change in shape and size. This can cause problems with focusing on close objects and make it harder to see things clearly as we get older. It is recommended that everyone over age 40 should get their eyes checked annually by an optometrist or ophthalmologist regardless of whether they wear glasses or not.

Computer eye strain can lead to a variety of symptoms. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be time to see an optometrist:

  • Blurred vision

  • Headaches

  • Pain or itching in your eyes

  • A change in the way your eyes look or feel

  • Trouble focusing on close objects or distant objects

  • Double vision (diplopia)

  • Poor night vision
